Innovation is alive and well and continues to amaze me.
I was attending a vendor briefing today with my colleague, Saul Judah, and we were listening to a vendor who was telling us about their offering. It focuses on (and I paraphrase) stewardship (as in policy enforcement) of data flowing from source systems like ERP, and the end-to-end use across the analytics landscape. Some might call this “analytic governance” or “applying aspects of information governance to the analytical use of data”.
The vendor sported some interesting capabilities for monitoring changes in schema, rules and data in remote systems. This neat capability helps improve the effectiveness of stewardship since you could automate the monitoring (and compliance) of other systems and by implication, the remote users. I was just thinking that if I had access to this capability in the governance (actually, the stewardship) of data when I was a business user, I might never have need to deploy an MDM hub. Heck, I might not even have needed an ERP system since I would have been able to assure data across a wide set of best-of-breed apps.
Imagine that – information stewardship solutions (at some point in the future) might negate the need to collect and centralize data in order to govern it.
Practically we are not quite there yet. But certainly if you take the neat features of all the vendors out there supporting aspects of information governance, we might end up with something pretty cool. And valuable. I am sure we will all get there at some point.
