February 9, 2011 – In an effort to appeal to a business audience, CA Technologies focused on ease of use and visualization features in the release of the latest addition of its data modeling solution.

CA ERwin Data Modeler r8 might not have an instant hold on every business intelligence user, but it does carry add clarity to the depth of previous editions, says Shawn Rogers at analyst company Enterprise Management Associates (EMA).

“It helps bridge that chasm that we see between business people who want information and the people who tend to know the data very well,” Rogers says.

New features in ERwin Data Modeler r8 include drawing tool capabilities in its data model visualizations, a spreadsheet-style bulk editor, auto-layout and themes for data models, and full-screen user interface components. The release also has updated support for DB2 z/OS and LUW v9.x platforms.

Donna Burbank, CA’s senior director of product marketing, says the data modeling solution had the back-end success with database managers, along with the company’s growing connectivity with that community. However, Burbank says the swell of data volume needs in the marketplace required CA to make some front-end changes to keep and attract users who may not be full-time data architects.

“When you’re trying to visualize a thousand items on a screen, what we had before didn’t quite cut it,” says Burbank.
