Whitehill Transport Fuels New Efficiencies for Atlantic Blue Cross Care

BACKGROUND: Atlantic Blue Cross Care provides health, dental, travel, life and disability benefits from its 12 offices throughout Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario. It also administers various provincial government programs in Canada, as well as national programs for the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

PLATFORMS: We are currently running Whitehill Transport Server, which is comprised of a Sun Solaris box running on UNIX, as well as Whitehill Transport Designer which runs on Windows XP.

PROBLEM SOLVED: As the largest healthcare benefits coverage provider on Canada's East Coast, we deal with an extraordinary amount of data and were getting bogged down with piles of paper-based reports and documents. We wanted a way to put that computer and paper-based data to work for us, which represented a tremendous challenge. Whitehill Transport allows us to capture data from multiple sources, transform it into a format most suitable for the end user and distribute it to wherever it needs to go. As a server-based solution, it allows us to extract data from any host system or application and dynamically transform that data and/or print stream into well-formed XML. Our Web portal then takes that XML and presents it in an easy-to-read report for distribution to both internal and external audiences.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The fact that Whitehill Transport can generate several customized output versions of the same information has been invaluable to increasing efficiency and improving customer service. Using Whitehill, all reports are automated. The software intercepts the Postscript print file and transforms it into XML, which is then pushed into our Oracle9i repository so it can be presented on a Web page for both internal and external viewing. The whole process has dramatically reduced paper use, printing and postage costs, and the chance of errors. It also has helped us speed up the delivery of information to the appropriate recipient.

STRENGTHS: Whitehill Transport was easy to implement and integrated seamlessly with our IT infrastructure. The tech support needed to get us up and running has been superb and has been available through every stage of our implementation. The solution has allowed us to significantly reduce the amount of paper-based reports generated and given us the tools to customize document output that meets the specific needs of the recipient. In short, it provides each person with exactly the kind of information he or she is looking for, in exactly the kind of format he or she needs.

WEAKNESSES: Whitehill Transport does not come with its own security features. However, for us, this has become a non-issue, due to the strength of our existing network security.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The cost of the Whitehill solution was a very attractive selling point. It was more cost-effective than building a solution in house or getting a customized solution from Oracle. Plus, Whitehill's time to deploy is significantly less than other, more complex solutions.

DELIVERABLES: Whitehill Transport allows us to quickly produce customer reports that provide better information in a more easy-to-read format. It also provides our CSRs and support team with instant access to data and information that they can then use to improve customer service.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Whitehill has proven itself an invaluable technology partner throughout every step of the process. Their consultants met with our staff in the beginning to lay out a plan of action, and they implemented it within weeks, without interrupting any of our business systems. Since that time, the application has been working very smoothly, and their service consultants have been readily available to answer any and all of our questions.

DOCUMENTATION: We had very specific requirements for documentation, and Whitehill has delivered. The documentation was thorough and easy to use, and it has made the whole process much easier. Although we enjoyed the personalized service, the documentation alone is enough for us to run their solutions effectively.
