What technologies are available to allow my data warehouse to be updated during the "online day?" I thought of partitioning the data in such a way that I would create a new partition for each update and then modify the table view to include the new partition. However, I'm not convinced by the practicalities of this - i.e., automating the whole procedure. Is there some sort of disk-mirroring solution?

Douglas Hackney's Answer: I recommend using a mirror approach. Create a mirror, break the connection, update one side, re-enable the mirror or re- direct utilization to the updated portion. This is the preferred method for near-real time data warehousing. Best if used with a three-segment partition so you retain the mirror backup.

Sid Adelman's Answer: Before you decide to use the data warehouse to update during the day, consider why you have a data warehouse. The data warehouse should be targeted for tactical and strategic decisions. Operational decisions may need real-time data; tactical and strategic decisions do not.
