Q: Can you give me an estimation of the breakdown of data around the world into marts, warehouses, enterprise data warehouses (EDWs), operational data stores (ODSs) and archives? Where do you see the industry going toward in the future?
Sid Adelman's Answer:
Each of these has its place and its reasons for existence, including security, organizational control, performance, timeliness and cost, and these reasons are not going to change in the future. Before you decide whether to have an ODS, an EDW, a data mart, and when to archive, you need to understand the requirements of the systems, the service level agreements (SLAs), organizational issues, your cost constraints, your performance requirements and the ability of your staff to make it happen.
