What are top- down and bottom-up models and how do they differ?
Doug Hackney’s Answer: In a classic, top-down, monolithic DW, the data marts are subsets of the data warehouse. In top-down and hybrid approaches, they are the building blocks of the DW system. Both models are valid, and both work, given the appropriate political and cultural setting. Top-down models require long-term, unwavering support of the very top of the business organization. Bottom-up models are more appropriate where that commitment and support may be lacking.
