We are planning to implement a data warehousing project.

We are planning to implement a data warehousing project. All our transactional databases are on AS/400. Our database is rather large - 35 million detail lines for 18 months of sales orders. Can you give me some advice on which platform will be the good candidate? What are these candidates strengths and weaknesses (i.e., WindowNT, Oracle/Unix or another AS/400)? I appreciate your help and your time.

Sid Adelman's Answer: You first must determine how big your data warehouse will eventually be and your required level of availability. The platforms you mentioned all have different abilities to scale and different capabilities for reliability and availability. As you ask the vendors for references, be sure they refer you to organizations that have data warehouses of at least your projected size. When you call the references, ask about the reliability of their systems including the number of hours/day and days/week they are scheduled, unscheduled downtime, time to recover, etc. Don't select a platform based on what the vendors say they will have in the future or what they say they can theoretically do.
