Q:

We are looking at Oracle Data Warehouse builder. Unfortunately, it only came out in March 2000, so there has not been much evaluation done. Could you could point me to any evaluations on this product? What is your opinion on this product? How long does it take to complete a data warehouse project considering one source system? We heard different opinions (from six months to two years). What would you say?

A:

Chuck Kelley's Answer: I don't know of any evaluations at this time, though I would be surprised if one has not been done. Regarding your other questions, assuming not with Oracle DW builder, how long does it take to complete considering a single source? I would have to say the answer to all of these questions (if you are a consultant!) is: it depends. How good are your requirements for the data warehouse? How is your data quality for that single system? How easy is it to extract the data? Do you have timestamps or do we have to sequentially read and do comparisons since the last extract? What end-user tool are you using, and do you have to build lots of applications for it? I think six months to two years is reasonable, though I would think the upper boundaries is a bit high. If the data quality is good and you understand the requirements, then I see no reason why six months is not sufficient.
