Q:

We are currently using ERwin as our data modeling tool and CA/Platinum repository for our centralized meta data repository. We would like to have our modeling tool have real-time access to the repository so that someone viewing a data model can see actual up-to-date definitions. I have not heard that Computer Associates is addressing this at this time. Is there a tool or combination of tools that can provide this functionality in an off the shelf format?

A:

David Marco’s Answer: After reading your e-mail, I am assuming that you want technical meta data users to view the meta data from the CA Repository in your ERwin modeling tool. If I understand your questions properly, there is currently not a tool that provides the functionality you’re looking for. However, since the Object Management Group and the Meta Data Coalition have merged, an answer may be coming. As the OMG continues to develop the meta model standards, and as the vendors adapt to them, this functionality will be coming. If the definitions that you are looking to provide are business meta data definitions, then I would question if ERwin is the best delivery mechanism. I would maintain these definitions in the repository and provide a front-end to this meta data. I would use the Web or whatever is the standard front-end of your warehouse.
