WatchGuard Technologies has launched the beta version of what it’s calling its next-generation unified threat management product, a virtual appliance called XTMv.

The company’s current WatchGuard XTM appliance includes a firewall, integrated threat management and application control and bundled management suite.

XTMv provides the same type of security capabilities offered by WatchGuard XTM series, including application control, intrusion prevention, gateway anti-virus and other functions. Additionally, the new series can manage traffic passing within a virtual infrastructure and across internal networks between virtual machines in the same cluster or on the same server, according to the company, which did not say when the product would be generally available. As a result, WatchGuard says, it’s well suited to implement security policies between applications, user communities or cloud tenants.

“The response to the extension of WatchGuard XTM security to virtual infrastructures has far exceeded our expectations, with hundreds of partners and customers requesting early access, ” Roger Klorese, director of product management at WatchGuard, said in a statement.
