VMware Inc. made a host of cloud-related announcements at VMworld 2013 this week, including the general availability of the VMware vCloud Hybrid Service.

The vCloud Hybrid Service, built on VMware vSphere, offers capabilities such as Direct Connect, which allows organizations to connect their data center network directly to vCloud Hybrid Service over private dedicated networks, providing secure connectivity; and Disaster Recovery as a Service, which automatically replicates applications and data to vCloud Hybrid Service, providing rapid automated recovery in the event of an outage.

The new service also features Cloud Foundry Platform as a Service, which allows companies to avoid the complexity of re-architecting applications to make them run well on public clouds.

VMware, also announced new products and services designed to help IT departments accelerate their adoption of a software-defined data center architecture and take advantage of advanced virtualization in areas such as networking and security, storage and availability, and management and automation.

Among the new products are VMware NSX, a network virtualization platform that provides “the entire networking and security model in software, decoupled from networking hardware,” according to the company. Also new is VMware Virtual SAN, which extends VMware vSphere to pool compute and direct-attached storage. VMware Virtual SAN provides a virtual data plane that clusters server disks and flash to create shared storage designed for virtual machines.

In addition, VMware and HP announced plans to deliver “the industry’s first federated network solution,” designed to provide organizations with unified automation of and visibility into their physical and virtual data center networks. The new offering will federate the HP Virtual Application Networks SDN Controller with the VMware NSX network virtualization platform to provide an integrated approach to automating physical and virtual network infrastructure.
