August 8, 2012 – VMware continued its rapid weeks of activity with a proposed deal for an analytics and machine data management product from Illinois vendor Pattern Insight.

The technology and team for Log Insight would join VMware in the acquisition, though Pattern Insight would remain a separate entity. Log Insight is an analytics and log management offering for real-time reviews and pattern recognition of machine-generated data.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. In a “thank you” note to supporters, Pattern Insight CEO and Co-Founder Spiros Xanthos said Log Insight’s continued development under VMware holds the potential to cut down on the complexity of virtualized and deployed data environments. Xanthos also stated his company, which started at the data development hotbed at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, would carry on and expand another product line, Code Insight.

VMware has taken on a flurry of transaction and leadership activity in the last five weeks. On July 3, VMware announced a buy of cloud automation and management provider DynamicOps, and more recently the virtualization vendor made a $1.23 billion cash and assets pitch for Nicira. Between those two deals, VMware announced that Pat Gelsinger, the former president of its parent company, EMC, would take over as CEO this fall.
