In one of a series of product announcements made at its European conference this week, VMware announced it has forged a partnership with Siemens to deliver a hosted virtual desktop service.

Siemens and VMware will jointly develop, market and deploy the hosted virtual desktop service to customers, which is based on VMware’s View 4.5 technology. Through the service, Siemens will be able to deliver a hosted desktop environment to its enterprise customers, allowing real-time access to desktops from any device.

Siemens says the service will significantly reduce desktop management complexity and costs. “Our hosted virtual desktops will provide a more compelling user experience than traditional desktops while enabling our customers to rapidly deploy, manage and secure, large-scale desktop infrastructures in minutes,” Ralf Eichler, Siemens vice president, Portfolio and Innovation, said in a statement.

“Perhaps most compelling for our customers is the reduced capital and operational expenses associated with large-scale client infrastructures.”

In addition to the Siemens partnership, VMware also launched Zimbra Desktop 2.0, an update of its cloud-based collaboration suite. Zimbra provides users with customizable access to cloud-based email, contacts, calendar and document management features.

Desktop 2.0 offers a new feature called Zimlets, which integrates Zimbra’s collaboration features with third-party resources, allowing users to create “mash-ups.” A social Zimlet provides updates from Twitter, Facebook, Digg and other social networks.

VMware said there are now more than 100 Zimlets available for download.
