BACKGROUND: With $4.3 trillion in assets under custody and $422 billion under management, State Street Corporation is the world's leading specialist in serving institutional investors. State Street Corporation's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol STT. A global company, State Street is the world's leading specialist in serving institutional investors.

PLATFORMS: State Street server: Pentium II class machine running Microsoft's IIS. Clients: PC-based 32-bit Windows platforms Windows NT and Windows 95.

PROBLEM SOLVED: As one of the world's largest global custodians and one of the top service providers of foreign exchange services to institutional investors, State Street is in a unique position to see the global flow of capital across borders. As part of its Global Link platform, State Street provides its clients with a visual representation of these flows through time. In its current form, this visualization consists of an animated .GIF file which was not interactive and provided limited information and insight. The interactive 3-D visualization under development will provide our clients with a greater ability to see trends over time within a country and within regions across the globe.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Visible Decisions In3D is a development suite for creating business visualization solutions. Data from any source can be quickly mapped into an intuitive 3-D visual representation to form an information landscape a picture of data. In3D is designed to fit seamlessly into any application, giving the user complete control over the landscape's appearance and behavior. Companies can quickly create robust enterprise applications using industry-standard development platforms and applications developed using In3D can be deployed on the desktop, on a server or via the Web.

STRENGTHS: A 3-D visualization provides our customers with a global picture of world capital flow. Interactive techniques, such as brushing, provide our customers with the ability to see both specific and summary data about countries and regions. Because it is a Web-enabled solution, it provides our customers with a seamless application that does not require them to purchase specialized hardware or software. They can use their existing Internet browsers.

WEAKNESS: Visible Decisions In3D C++ edition 1.1 version had fixed-text capabilities; in particular, font style and sizes were restricted. Visible Decisions has addressed this matter in the latest 2.0 release of the product which we are now using.

SELECTION CRITERIA: We considered other technologies to solve our problem, but did not believe they were powerful enough to provide a complete solution. One of the key components to the selection criteria was to use a mature C++ class library instead of a new technology that has not had time to stabilize. Furthermore, the technology we selected had to integrate seamlessly with a third-party proprietary database developed specifically for storing dynamic data to be accessed via the Web. Visible Decisions In3D 2.0 C++ edition addressed these requirements.

DELIVERABLES: Visible Decisions provided State Street with a custom developed Web-enabled 3-D application entitled International Money Flow Visualization. This visualization allows our customers to see global capital flow changes on the Web.

VENDOR SUPPORT: State Street outsourced the project to Visible Decisions' consulting services. The application was designed using Rapid Application Prototyping (RAP), Visible Decisions In3D Studio and In3D 2.0 C++ edition. Visible Decisions involved us in every step of the design, development and deployment cycle of the application. This development approach greatly reduced our time to complete the application and deploy it.
