Veritas Software Corp., a Mountain View, Calif.-based developer of storage applications, has acquired The Kernel Group Inc., an Austin, Texas-based provider of disaster recovery software.

With its purchase of the privately held firm, Veritas gains access to The Kernel Group's Bare Metals Restore product, which is designed to fully automate recovery of Windows and all major Unix platforms in the event of data corruption or hardware failure. The tool will automate and accelerate the full- system recovery capabilities of the Veritas NetBackup software product which provides a common enterprise-wise recovery application.
