REVIEWER: Wally Beddoe, vice president of operations at SIX Telekurs USA Inc.
BACKGROUND: SIX Telekurs specializes in the procurement, processing and distribution of international financial information for investment advisory services, portfolio management, financial analysis and securities administration. SIX Telekurs is a member of the SIX Group, which provides first-rate services in the areas of securities trading, payment transactions, clearing and settlement in addition to financial market information.
PLATFORMS: Our client/server platforms are HP DL585 running SUSE Linux, and Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server with a few Solaris clients remaining in the mix.
PROBLEM SOLVED: At SIX Telekurs, downtime is not an option for us, as our IT infrastructure collects, manipulates and distributes real-time financial data. As one of the top three global providers of financial data, our services are mission-critical to thousands of customers, and we simply can’t afford performance hiccups. We needed to replace our bulky legacy software vendor with a more agile solution for server monitoring, application monitoring and capacity planning in our heterogeneous data centers. We required a solution that was light, reliable, easy to use and provided the accurate reporting and planning for a financial institution. It also needed to fit into our IT budget and alert us to potential performance problems quickly and provide historical information for trending and capacity planning.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: After quickly deploying up.time to more than 125 servers, we saw an immediate and significant cost savings in licensing and consulting fees. Time spent on monitoring and planning processes by consultants and internal resources dropped dramatically. We’ve experienced a 510 percent ROI from using up.time. We use up.time’s graphical capacity planning and server monitoring software for its reporting strengths, which provides both out-of-the-box and customizable charting to help us quickly understand efficiencies. up.time has scaled with ease, and recently we’ve expanded the up.time solution to include our London and Singapore datacenters. We provide real-time data that keeps the market flowing through databases that include real-time prices and securities administration data on nearly 7 million instruments sourced from more than 850 stock exchanges and other sources. We depend on up.time to keep our system and servers in the green and to proactively predict potential problems before they affect user performance.
STRENGTHS: uptime software’s application and server management software is hard to beat, providing a deep and easy-to-use enterprise class product at a fraction of the price. We quickly realized that we would save more than 60 percent by going with up.time versus similar products. For one price, we have access to the entire up.time suite, including complete server monitoring, application monitoring, capacity planning, SLA monitoring and more across our different platforms. This is a huge strength, as up.time costs less, yet provides a deeper and easier-to-use solution. The lower cost is a combination of simple all-in-one licensing, ease of installation, the lack of consulting needed, and the increase in productivity from three-click reporting, deep root-cause analysis tools and up.time’s underlying performance data warehouse. uptime software has raised the level of confidence across our IT organization. In fact, our technical analysts are such big fans of up.time that many of their initiatives and assessments include up.time’s reports to show the value of their work. up.time has exceeded our expectations, and I’m not sure I’ve ever said that about a software company before.
WEAKNESSES: The main weakness of the up.time product is probably the historical chart generation functionality. While it does work, the time it takes to crunch the data and return a chart can be lengthy.
SELECTION CRITERIA: After looking at a number of software we turned to uptime software and found a solution that is deep, complete, affordable and provides all the reports we needed in an accurate, easy-to-understand way. Additionally, a full deployment of up.time cost us less than the annual maintenance fee for the “Big 4” solutions we considered.
DELIVERABLES: up.time provides robust, all-in-one monitoring and reporting across our multiplatform data centers, including deep server monitoring, application monitoring, capacity planning, SLA monitoring and reporting, and more. Our technical support staff receives reliable, real-time alerts from up.time before the problem occurs.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Vendor support has been outstanding from the very beginning of the relationship, which is critical for us as we demand the same level of support from our vendors that we pledge to our own customers. As far as vendors go, uptime software is most definitely top shelf when it comes to relationship management.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation provided was exceptionally easy to use and understand. There’s documentation every step of the way.
