BACKGROUND: Union Pacific Railroad's Timekeeping Department, headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, has been utilizing static reports to provide budget information and cost saving opportunities.

PLATFORMS: Union Pacific Railroad's Timekeeping department accesses the Eoscene Intelligence Portal through the use of Eoscene's EIPView Hosted Application Service, which operates on a Linux/PostgreSQL platform. The Eoscene Intelligence Portal utilizes open scalable technology and can be deployed on Linux, UNIX and Windows NT, 2000 and XP operating systems. The relational data store supports Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase and PostgreSQL.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Timekeeping's mission to pay all employees accurately on time, the first time, every time has been enhanced by the ability to provide service to all our customers by increasing payroll accuracy, providing accurate budget information and allowing opportunities for cost reductions. The Timekeeping department is responsible for providing timely and accurate information to internal customers, including remote field operations. Our internal customers demand individual reports based upon their job function. This information needs to be presented in different formats and at different levels. Our ability to provide this data to our customers was constrained by limited personnel, access to technical resources and the amount of manual processing time required to produce the existing reports. We needed a solution that would provide us the maximum benefit without utilizing significant internal resources.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The Eoscene Intelligence Portal allows us the ability to rapidly deliver data and analysis, internally and externally, on demand. The multidimensional drill-down concept provides the customer with the ability to massage the data and test patterns of accuracy. Customers can also view labor expenses based on their job function and set threshold alerts for job-specific items. Using the Eoscene Intelligence Portal, customers can download the data in various output formats such as spreadsheets or PDF files. Timekeeping can answer very specific business questions related to budgeting for field operations. Automated alerts can also be set to monitor specific areas of concern.

STRENGTHS: The main strength of the new system is the ability to provide the drill-down functionality without using extra resources writing the code. The interface is easy to use and rapid adoption is natural. The implementation process and learning the tools is quick and reliable. Speed of delivery and service reliability are also strong product features.  

WEAKNESSES: The main weakness of the product is printing of the graphical images. At times, some of the reporting needs additional detail added. This issue will be addressed in the next release of the product due out later this summer.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Other products evaluated were WebFocus, Siebel Analytics, Custom Visual Basic Web Application and SQL Server Reporting Services. Timekeeping was looking for a business intelligence suite featuring: a Web-based interface, ad hoc drill-down capability, exception alerting and notification, graphical output options and easy customization for the user level, as well as the best value placing minimal strain on Timekeeping and IT resources. Eoscene was able to provide the best turnaround time and implementation time frame.

DELIVERABLES: Eoscene delivered a data model designed specifically for our business needs utilizing data from our specific business rules SQL Server. End users can quickly access data through a Web browser and easily view the information they need in acceptable formats. Accessibility to the data has been top notch with minimal downtime. Eoscene also provided documentation and initial onsite training and support to ensure that the system was successfully deployed.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Eoscene provided implementation of their product in an expedited manner. They are responsive to our needs and want the same continuous improvement that customers want. Their support has been reliable and successful.

DOCUMENTATION: Administrative and end-user documentation is available and useful.
