Too often, recruiting for high-turnover hourly retail positions is paper- intensive and time-consuming. Unicru makes the recruitment process simpler, more effective and even profitable for retailers ­ including Toys"R"Us, Blockbuster Video, Target, GNC and Kmart. Unicru's solutions are delivered via in-store kiosks, back-office processing of an employer's online hiring system and a Web site.

To help companies hire smarter and uncover hidden strategic advantages, Unicru enables customers to see more intuitively into the data they gather. For example, Unicru helps employers target potential tax credits achieved by hiring workers from disadvantaged areas. Work Opportunity Tax Credits (WOTC) and Welfare To Work Credits (WTW) are federal programs assisting underprivileged individuals to find work and build careers. While it's estimated that eight percent of walk-in hires may be eligible, this "automatic" cost reduction is often overlooked by companies using paper application processes. However, with Unicru's interactive WOTC calculator, employers can pinpoint eligible areas and target recruitment efforts. Thanks to its advanced intelligence and analysis-reporting platform, Unicru can save an employer several thousand dollars per eligible hire. Some companies realize more than $3 to $4 million per year in tax credits.

Unicru's rapid growth required more effective visualization and analysis of critical information to help Unicru customers assume greater control over the employment process and allow them to make more informed decisions about their processes.

Prior to fall of 2000, Unicru used Crystal Reports exclusively for analysis and presentation of critical data. As data volume grew, this solution limited flexibility and data delivery capabilities. Unicru conducted a series of focus groups to determine the most appropriate course of action. Overwhelmingly, participants revealed they wanted an easily understood, easily used application that efficiently delivered up-front, educated, customized analysis.

Support for Microsoft SQL Server 7 was mandatory. Internet security was a big issue as well, with default access protocols (such as port 80 delivery) streamlining the process. Rapid development and deployment was critical, as we process applications at a run rate of 3.2 million per year with 6 million projected by year-end 2001. The flexibility to keep pace with changing development in back-end OLAP data and the capability to provide customers with real-time data was also key.

With a list of internal and external criteria in hand, Unicru began evaluating several front-end analytic applications. Some vendors required separate security plug-ins at the customer site, which we viewed as a potential customer inconvenience. Other vendors had unreasonably large footprints. Implementing these types of solutions would have consumed valuable RAM and hard disk capacity, unfavorably impacting downloads and access to information.

After close scrutiny, Unicru chose arcplan's dynaSight to provide the analytical front-end to its SQL Server data warehouse. Its strong server-side functionality allows developers and end users to get fast, intuitive, flexible access to data through a convenient browser window. dynaSight does not require customers to reconfigure their security structures. It offers Unicru and its customers a highly flexible means of developing custom reports, without additional complex programming. SQL cubes can be switched on the fly to create reports. Browser-based access meant a smaller footprint, helping Unicru and its customers conserve computing resources.

Because users include district managers, human resources vice presidents, regional managers and store managers, a level playing field was needed to ensure equal and simplified access to information. The "executive dashboard" allows users to view business-critical data at the click of a mouse. This provides a succinct analysis of key performance indicators, applicant flow, assessment results, WOTC statistics and hire details ­ all tailored for different levels of management. Customers appreciate the flatness of the learning curve as well as the depth of reporting they're able to conduct.

Unicru has ambitious plans for the future. Customer functionality will be enhanced with reports such as retention analysis (turnover and tenure statistics), system compliance and employee sales performance. The platform is being deployed internally, reporting on applicant processing statistics, Web site hits and conversions to applications, and industry-wide aggregate statistics and trends. As Unicru continues to expand its offerings, the new reporting platform will be instrumental in helping the company manage change and the challenges of growth.
