PLATFORMS: The Trillium Software System is platform independent with references from clients operating on mainframes, UNIX systems, OS/2, WinNT, Win 95 and is portable to SAP.
BACKGROUND: Cincinnati Financial is a holding company whose best-known unit, Cincinnati Insurance Co., markets a broad range of business and personal policies through a 27-state independent agent network.
PROBLEM SOLVED: Cincinnati Financial required a platform-independent data cleansing and reengineering solution that would work in both batch and on-line modes. Their claims database typically received batch feeds daily regarding new policyholders and the names of products or service provider organizations such as loss payees or mortgagees. The primary goal was to cleanse batch feeds as they happened, not after the fact. Another objective was to eliminate database duplication, thereby improving system performance. Cincinnati Financial utilized Trillium to process new claims applications retrieved from a mainframe DB2 database and manipulate the data on-line from a desktop DB2 database. The cleansing tool operated invisibly, in an on-line, interactive mode.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The Trillium Software System is a platform independent set of robust data cleansing tools that enables organizations to cleanse data at multiple points within the organization's information architecture and develop a process of data quality management independent of specific projects. Trillium's modules, the Parser, Matcher and Geocoder which are written in ANSI standard "C," are callable by on-line applications to cleanse data at the point of entry. Additionally, Trillium's Conversion Workbench and Utilities Library allow organizations to browse and investigate all types of data to unlock information buried in free-form text and explore unexpected values found in a wide variety of fields.
STRENGTHS: The Trillium Software System performs context-sensitive, pattern-recognition functions at the individual data value level. Trillium allows organizations to cleanse and standardize all data types. A base rule set of over 200,000 name and address patterns and shapes is provided and forms the foundation for initial data cleansing. The Conversion Workbench provides data investigation and analysis functionality for all non-name and address data. Customized rules used to handle unique situations within a data store can be developed and retained as a separate rule-set base. Their reuse and portability form the foundation of a data quality management process that is independent of specific projects and can be used as the base of an enterprise-wide data cleansing process.
WEAKNESSES: Trillium is limited to data cleansing, conversion and reengineering capabilities and does not provide functions such as extraction and propagation.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Trillium was selected because of its ability to provide an enterprise-wide data cleansing solution to the organization. Trillium was easy to use. Cincinnati Financial's analysts and programmers were surprised that customizing name and pattern matching tables was so simple.
VENDOR SUPPORT: The Trillium Software System Division marketing and professional services staff are very knowledgeable about their product and worked with Cincinnati Financial in the installation and tuning process. Interactive classroom training leads a user through the different components that comprise the system, their functionality and how they process the information. Trillium welcomed our suggestions and encourages a partnership in developing a world class tool that helps to solve real business problems.
DOCUMENTATION: The interactive GUI and Trillium Control Center are easy to implement, understand and use. The reference manuals are easy to use and provide diagrams and sample code examples, along with explanations that support the module functions.
