Merchant also has worked at Fannie Mae, Merrill Lynch, and Exigen Capital in technology leadership roles. He left the New York City government last year and had been a consultant before joining TIAA-CREF.

TIAA-CREF's former CIO, Annabelle Bexiga, accepted a COO position in the company's asset management unit last year.
Merchant will report to company CEO Roger Ferguson.
TIAA-CREF has long-been a data-driven company, working closely with IBM and other IT partners on a range of real-time customer data projects. TIAA-CREF has also given back to the big data analytics industry, sharing best practices and insights at NJIT and other colleges.
