DAMA International (DAMA-I) was established in the mid-1980s through a coalition of several existing DAMA chapters. It was originally established as DAMA National, but soon became DAMA International. DAMA initially stood for Data Administration Management Association; however, in the mid-1990s, the name was changed to Data Management Association International to represent a broader perspective for data resource management.

DAMA International is a nonprofit, vendor-neutral, member-based organization that has chapters and members throughout the world. Its income is largely from conferences and member dues. DAMA International has continued to evolve since its creation and today is the premier organization for data professionals worldwide. Its mission is to inspire excellence in data management.

In 2003, DAMA International established a strategic direction to take the lead in creating a professional data management discipline. One task in this strategic direction was to create an affiliated DAMA International Foundation. That task was accomplished in early 2004.

The DAMA International Foundation is the education and research affiliate of DAMA international with a mission of promoting professional data management. It is a discipline-based, vendor-neutral organization with an income largely from grants and donations.

The DAMA International Foundation Board consists of the following officers:

  • President, Michael Brackett
  • VP Finances, Ron Shelby
  • VP Operations, Joe Oates
  • VP Marketing, Ingrid Hunt
  • VP Education, Deborah Henderson
  • VP Certifications, Eva Smith
  • VP Standards, Dan Paolini
  • VP Research, Gil Laware
  • Ethics Officer, Anne Marie Smith
  • Contracts Officer (open)

An international Board of Advisors consists of the following people:

  • Dr. Peter Chen
  • Dr. Bernhard Thalheim
  • Dr. Terry Halpin
  • Dr. Jeffrey Hoffer
  • Dr. Nick Bontis
  • Dr. Graeme Shanks

Information about the DAMA International Foundation and contact information for the Board of Directors and Advisors can be found on the DAMA International Web page at www.dama.org.

The DAMA International Foundation receives input from the DAMA International Professional Groups (refer to www.dama.org for details) and prepares or recommends education curricula, certification criteria, standards and techniques to sell professional data management to organizations. An initial education curriculum is currently under review and initial certifications are in place through an affiliation between DAMA International and the ICCP. Work has begun on identifying and evaluating current standards and on developing techniques for selling professional data management.

If you would like to become personally or financially involved in this important strategic direction, please contact DAMA International: visit www.dama.org for details, contact one of the DAMA International Foundation Officers or contact a Professional Group Moderator. The data management discipline will only be as good as the people that participate in this important strategic initiative.
