The worldwide server market declined 26 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001 from $16.9 billion in fourth quarter 2000 to $12.6 billion in 2001. Unit shipments declined seven percent to 1.143 million units from fourth quarter 2000, says IDC.

"Despite the decline in revenue and shipment for the quarter, there are some flames beginning to kindle the market," says Vernon Turner, IDC's group vice president of global enterprise server solutions. "When comparing the decline rate with the previous quarter, there are indications that the server market has bottomed out and that it will return to its average seasonal trends in 2002."

Top five vendors market share in worldwide market according to revenue share in fourth quarter 2001:

  1. 1. IBM 32 percent
  2. 2. Compaq 17 percent
  3. 3. Hewlett-Packard 14 percent
  4. 4. Sun Microsystems 12 percent
  5. 5. Dell 7 percent
