A subdued group took part in a discussion of the ripple effects from the Sept. 11 tragedy that are bound to reshape the business world audience at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2001. Tom Austen, a Gartner research fellow, called for thoughtful evaluation of security needs and careful planning for a secure future.

"Reviewing business practices, one thing became clear: no one anticipated that so many organizations were unprepared for the massive business challenges posed by the attack," Austen said. "A time of crisis is not the time to be doing disaster recovery planning, it's a time to put the plan into effect."
