Servers will be increasingly differentiated by application and network roles. In fact, the addition of Web-enabled clickstreams to legacy systems will create a multiplier effect on server placements, says George Weiss, a Gartner analyst.

Weiss also predicts a flat growth curve for server spending over the next five years. "Spending isn’t expected to grow rapidly, despite the impact of the Internet and e-business," he says. "The primary reasons are continuing decline in the average selling price and deployments of low-entry priced server appliances."
