Data center co-location and hosting company Terremark Worldwide says it has launched construction of its third data center in the capital region as a result of strong demand from government and enterprise customers.

The newest data center will be built at the company’s Capital Region campus, located near Culpeper, Va., approximately 60 miles outside of Washington, D.C. Terremark said it will invest $45 million in the 50,000 square foot facility, which will offer a full suite of IT services, from managed hosting to disaster recovery and enterprise cloud computing.

The company said the first two data centers it built at the Capital Region campus are 75% full and based on a “robust” pipeline it felt confident to proceed with the third facility.

“Our position as the leading cloud computing provider for Federal government agencies, along with the heightened drive for greater efficiency for IT systems within the U.S. government and the increase in IT spending trends among enterprises, has helped fuel our success in Virginia,” Terremark chief executive Manuel Medina said in a statement announcing the project.

Terremark, headquartered in Miami, Fla., has seen its revenue surge from $48 million in 2005 to $250 million in 2009. It opened the first data center at its 30-acre Capital Region campus in June of 2008 and opened up the second facility in February of 2009. The company said the campus is designed to accommodate up to five data centers of similar size.

Terremark appears to be an early winner in the Federal government’s move to adopt cloud computing. In November the company said it had garnered about $13.2 million in cloud computing business, with the majority coming from the Federal government.
