BACKGROUND: Egmont is an international entertainment media house that creates quality entertainment. We have more than 4,200 employees in more than 100 companies in 24 countries. Egmont's focus is children worldwide and the entire family in Scandinavia. Egmont is today the leading provider of entertainment in Scandinavia and the largest in printed entertainment for kids and teens in the remainder of Europe. Outside Europe, our most recent international ventures have taken us into markets in Asia. Our challenge is to create and provide quality entertainment content through a wide range of media and formats to our consumers in all our markets. In 1999, Egmont generated DKK 8.2 billion (EUR 1.1 billion) in revenues.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Because Egmont Entertainment operates in multiple countries, keeping track of the performance of many products can be challenging. For example, to get information regarding a film's performance throughout Scandinavia formerly took up to two weeks. Data needed to be extracted from four different systems, and this long and cumbersome process frustrated all involved parties. Important information including internal benchmarking, performance data of new product launches and a basic overview of business performance was difficult to analyze. We needed an OLAP business intelligence system that would provide centralized data from the different national offices for analysis.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: We found what we were looking for in TARGIT Analysis, a Web-based business intelligence solution. The solution provides a strategic business overview in an interactive, graphical interface, enabling us to easily find the information we need to make appropriate business decisions. Data is pulled from the Navision ERP systems located at the four regional offices via Microsoft SQL Server Data Transformation Services into a SQL Server database. With our TARGIT and Microsoft-based business intelligence system, we are able to assemble business data and then analyze and share that data among the international offices and appropriate vendors. Data that once took two weeks to collect now takes only minutes. Our TARGIT solution enables managers to perform internal benchmarking, monitor the results of new product launches and improve vendor relationships. We save both time and money in this process.

STRENGTHS: With TARGIT Analysis, our information is always available for analysis ­ any time and anywhere. Our employees didn't need extensive training before they were able to use the system. They can view data from different business units and create individual reports for their own use. Users can interact with the TARGIT software without the need of assistance from the IT department. TARGIT gives our employees a graphical picture of the data so they can start their analysis at the highest level and then drill down into the details to get further answers. This sharing of strategic business information is improving Egmont's critical relationships both inside and outside of our organization.

WEAKNESSES: TARGIT Analysis was initially weak on its reporting functionality. TARGIT has since developed a reporting tool that is designed for the advanced user.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Egmont Entertainment spent a great deal of time looking at OLAP business intelligence solutions. We were looking for a system that didn't require extensive training of our end users, yet had a low cost of overall ownership and ease of deployment. TARGIT Analysis satisfied all criteria.

DELIVERABLES: TARGIT delivers intuitive business intelligence solutions that make it easy for general business users to see and understand strategic business indicators that allow for better-informed decisions. TARGIT provides the Egmont team the ability to perform sophisticated analysis and data mining on key business information with just a few clicks of the mouse.

VENDOR SUPPORT: TARGIT has been very responsive to Egmont's needs. Before the installation process, Egmont took advantage of TARGIT's technical implementation training course. Overall, support was excellent.

DOCUMENTATION: The implementation of TARGIT is intuitive and Microsoft standards-based. Deployment requirements were simple, and there was little need to rely on documentation to understand the product's functionality and features.
