March 21, 2012 – Symantec announced it will take over mobile application management provider Nukona Inc., its second deal in the mobile space in less than a month.
Nukona offers solutions for distribution and control of applications and mobile data without requirements to manage devices. Symantec stated Nukona would bolster “bring your own device” offerings under its enterprise mobility portfolio, with an extension of application protection that covers native and Web-based apps with a management layer that leaves personal apps and activities undisturbed.
In a release on the deal, CJ Desai, SVP for the Endponit and Mobility Group at Symantec, said the acquisition is meant to address the growing security and governance needs around BYOD and the “consumerization of IT.”
“As the adoption of mobile devices and apps continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, one of the biggest challenges for customers is to protect and manage the native apps, data and environments of these devices,” said Desai.
Earlier in March, Symantec also announced a deal for mobile security and management provider Odyssey Software.
Founded in 2010, Nukona is privately-held and based in California. In September, Nukona had closed on an unspecified amount of startup accelerator funding from Citrix.
Financial terms of the Symantec deal were not disclosed, though Symantec expects it to close in April.
