(Return to beginning of story)

Okay, Windows has 1.4 million friends on Facebook and we know they can't all be employees. And, you know what, we actually really do like a lot of Windows 7.

But we're darned if we can figure out these "To the Cloud" commercials. Of the two we have seen the most, one is about using something like remote desktop to help a stranded couple at an airport watch video from their home hard drive. A lot of us are already grateful for this Microsoft legacy app for letting your help desk undo your stupid behavior, but we're having trouble spotting the cloud angle here.

The other "To the Cloud" spot we keep seeing seems to be about retouching and posting family pictures with some kind of hosted PhotoShop-like product and Microsoft's equivalent of Flikr, not exactly new turf. Microsoft said last week that Azure customer T-Mobile is creating a cloud-based photosharing upload site for its customers.

That said, we looked up the references to both these commercials at Microsoft sites and couldn't prove our observations wrong. If we're missing something big we'd appreciate an update but generally, we would do so much better with these folks if they'd just talk to us more often.
