BACKGROUND: Sun Microsystems, a $10 billion Fortune 500 company, provides key components that drive the Internet as well as corporate intranets and business-to-business extranets. Sun produces high-speed microprocessors, scalable enterprise server systems, robust software and network storage as well as the innovative, platform-independent Java and Jini technologies.

PLATFORMS: Sun operates its data warehouse on Sun Solaris Enterprise Servers running Sybase ASE and Teleran. Teleran administrative facilities are running on Sun UltraSparc workstations.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Sun Information Technology (IT) group supports Sun's worldwide supply chain data warehouse. Critical to the business, the supply chain data warehouse is used to monitor product demand and ensure adequate inventory to meet that demand. As the number of users and the scale of the data warehouse rapidly expanded, key issues faced by Sun IT were: maintaining and improving service levels and predicting what data is valuable to the users. The Sun IT team needed a data warehouse query monitoring and management system that provided a "fact-based" understanding of the data warehouse usage to maintain and improve technical and business performance of this strategic application. The goal was to better meet the expectations and business objectives of the data warehouse users.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Sun IT has found that Teleran iSight delivers an unobtrusive and easy-to-use query monitor and usage/performance analyses system. Teleran's 100 percent Java iSight product captures key usage and performance statistics and delivers a packaged data mart of reports and analysis. iSight's index and aggregation analyses which suggest where to build indexes and what aggregations to build or discard have been particularly helpful in speeding performance. Other iSight performance tuning reports suggest where data should be further subsetted as well as what unused or infrequently used data should be deleted or stored off-line. Teleran's iGuard real-time query performance management facility should improve service levels for Sun by predicting and blocking high-cost and runaway queries before they tie up database resources. In addition, iGuard's automated rule-based query manager promises to keep users from making common semantic mistakes in their queries mistakes that can cause inaccurate query results. Sun is investigating the use of iGuard's database security rules in the future as well as Teleran's recently released aggregate management facility, iSum.

STRENGTHS: Sun is optimistic about Teleran's robust and scalable "100 percent Java" server which is designed to support hundreds, and even thousands, of data warehouse users. Teleran bundles in BrioQuery as its reporting and analysis facility, providing an easy and flexible reporting system for Sun's data warehouse as well as query facilities to do incremental ad hoc analysis against its data mart of usage-monitoring statistics.

WEAKNESSES: iSight's packaged reports and analysis provide Sun with an effective monitoring and performance tuning environment with the flexibility to do ad hoc analysis. However, Sun would like to see more drill-down capabilities into iSight information.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Sun IT considered other query monitoring systems as well as building an in-house monitoring and management facility. Teleran provides Sun with a robust and unobtrusive architecture on which to deliver the monitoring and dynamic query management features they need. Teleran's suite of monitoring and performance management products provides Sun with a clear product growth path beyond just monitoring as its data warehouse grows in size and complexity.

DELIVERABLES: Teleran's offering enables Sun IT to improve its service levels and control over the data warehouse while minimizing costs and administrative overhead. Improving the management of the capacity planning and budgeting process will ensure that the data warehouse will continue to support the growth in use and the business value it delivers to Sun.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Teleran's support and care has been far beyond the level of support Sun typically receives from software vendors. Issues that were encountered were resolved promptly and professionally.

DOCUMENTATION: Teleran delivers comprehensive and easy-to-use documentation.
