November 14, 2012 – Silicon startup Sumo Logic is branching out from its nascent log management role with a new dashboard application that it anticipates will bring attention to a broader data management audience.
Sumo Logic’s new and first cloud-based dashboard is the front-facing portal for its streaming query engine connected to enterprise applications, systems and infrastructure. Users can customize terabytes of data streams into the dashboards, which are also equipped with Sumo Logic’s LogReduce, a solution for summarizing log code or data into patterns. Offered as service and housed on Amazon Web Services, the analytics and data compression are handled by Sumo Logic.
The typical user would be the application management professional, though the growing importance of real-time analysis capabilities opens it up to more IT officers and even power users looking to tap into an enterprise initiative – like a gaming or performance management service – that is connected with log data, says Sanjay Sarathy, Sumo Logic CMO.
Testing and a beta version have been in the works since the summer, though Sarathy says the dashboards “follow through on the visualization layer for a lot of that analytics work that’s been going on” since the company was founded more than two years ago.
As enterprise analytics mature, cloud platforms and portals will be more open to innovative insight compared with their on-premise alternative, says Jonah Kowall, Gartner research director, IT Operations Management.
“The on-premise offerings allow for tighter control of data, sometimes less of a requirement than the fear of approaching the security organization for requirements. Cloud-based analytics tools have the advantage of multi-tenant data analysis and tuning for the engine based on the larger data set being stored and analyzed.”
The two-year old firm offers an enterprise version and “freemium” version of the as-a-service dashboards.
