While unstructured data types and new database management systems play an increasing role in data ecosystems, structured data in relational database management systems (RDBMS) remains the foundation of the IT infrastructure in most companies, according to a new report from Unisphere Research commissioned by Dell.

Although advancements in the ability to capture, store, retrieve and analyze new forms of unstructured data have gained significant attention, the report says, a North America survey of database administrators shows that most organizations continue to focus mainly on managing structured data, and will do so for the foreseeable future.
