Unit shipments of smart glasses will jump nearly 150% in 2015, almost of all of which will be in the enterprise and public sector, according to a new study by ABI Research.
The firm expects more than 90% of smart glasses to be purchased within the enterprise market or public sector this year. That includes deployments for remote assistance, police and military, security, warehouse and barcode scanning.
“Smart glasses were much hyped in 2014 as a smartphone replacement, largely on the back Google’s Glass product announced in early 2013,” Nick Spencer, ABI senior practice director, said in a statement.
“However, 2014 showed the use case for smart glasses is task specific, for example remote assistance, security—facial and number plate recognition—augmented reality, and virtual reality,” Spencer said.
Smart glasses will not be the highest growth category in the wearables space, however. Smart watches will see significant consumer adoption at more than 300% unit shipment growth in 2015, ABI says. This is primarily due to the market entry of Apple.
