Costa Mesa, Calif., Oct. 24 Seagate Technology, a leading manufacturer of tape storage products, announced that it began shipping the LTO Ultrium-format Viper 200 tape drives and Ultrium 1 data cartridges on October 17 to Seagate’s authorized distributors worldwide. The Viper 200 is Seagate’s lead entry into the product platform based on the Ultrium format of Linear Tape-Open technology, an open-format tape specification developed by Seagate Technology, Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp. The Viper 200 protects up to 200 gigabytes of data per cartridge and with backup speeds of up to 115.2 gigabytes per hour and is available in both Ultra2 SCSI LVD and HVD configurations.
“The Viper 200 is now available to meet the needs of end users in the midrange market that require high-capacity, performance and reliability. This feature-rich backup solution provides a strong opportunity for the IT community to embrace the many benefits of an open tape format as well as Viper specific features such as Dynamic Powerdown and FastSense, which become significant for many vertical markets that require highly-reliable protection of volumes of critical data,” said Brad Renfree, senior product marketing manager for Ultrium products, Seagate Removable Storage Solutions.
