BACKGROUND: New York Life Insurance Company, a Fortune 100 company, is one of the largest insurance companies in the United States and the world. Founded in 1845 and headquartered in New York City, New York Life and its affiliates offer traditional life insurance, annuities and long-term care. On the investment side, New York Life's affiliates provide institutional asset management and trust services and through a subsidiary, NYLIFE Distributors Inc., provide an array of securities products and services such as institutional and retail mutual funds, including 401(k).
PLATFORMS: Seagate Info is installed on Compaq 7000 and Compaq 3000 servers with dual processors, 500MB of RAM and 40GB hard drives.
PROBLEM SOLVED: New York Life Insurance Company wanted to build a data warehouse that would consolidate and house its data in a secure, yet easily accessible environment. However, over the years, different business departments throughout the company had been using several types of data analysis tools to query information from various databases. This resulted in poor communication between departments and created a major problem of providing a single source for internal support. The company sought an enterprise e- reporting system that could provide a corporate view of all its data, while making it easily accessible to all of its employees. Seagate Info provided an enterprise e-business intelligence system to unite employees and information, thereby improving New York Life's business performance.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Seagate Info provided a global infrastructure, including Web- based access for users to access IBM DB2, SAP on Oracle and SQL Server databases with a common set of user-friendly tools and standard reports. This solved the problem of central support and saved the company money in maintaining diverse reporting and analytical software. Seagate Info also provided users in the financial management and corporate compliance departments with multidimensional OLAP analytical technologies, giving them strategic insight into their information.
STRENGTHS: Giving end users the ability to access, analyze and share reports via the Web has created harmony and conformity throughout the company. In New York, 400 users access the Web application for production, financial and human resources reports. The enterprise-wide solution has bred a positive corporate culture and improved communication between departments. Seagate Info's unique multitier architecture and enterprise information sharing and delivery capabilities ensure that the system can scale to meet any user demand. New York Life's report sizes range from one page to 2.5 million records.
WEAKNESSES: There have been some small glitches in the implementation of Seagate Info in New York Life's Florida office. Seagate's Enterprise Support has provided exceptional customer service, and New York Life is confident the final implementation into the Florida region will be a success.
SELECTION CRITERIA: New York Life preferred Seagate Software's highly scalable, enterprise e-business intelligence solutions for its superior accessing, analyzing, reporting and Web- sharing features. New York Life designers were especially attracted to the front-end, Windows-based GUI and the OLAP cube capabilities. Because Seagate Info is in its seventh release and is based on the award-winning Crystal Reports technology, New York Life trusted the maturity and stability of the product.
DELIVERABLES: By moving report creation out of the IT arena and putting it into the hands of the users, New York Life is looking forward to reducing the cost associated with the number of IT professionals required to support report creation. Seagate Info gave New York Life a corporate view of its data and eliminated redundant work efforts. The inherent flexibility of Seagate Info's multitiered solution lets users schedule their own reports and enables them to view other reports throughout the enterprise.
VENDOR SUPPORT: New York Life has an enterprise support contract that delivers the highest level of support for organizations with mission-critical enterprise business intelligence implementations. Seagate Software has provided a senior team of technical support specialists who are familiar with the company's technical issues and who are available 24 hours a day. Seagate Software worked extensively in the implementation of the system, and its hands-on support has been invaluable to the overall success of the deployment.
