BACKGROUND: Bankers Trust New York Corporation has been a leading financial services organization on Wall Street since 1903. With more than 18,000 employees, Bankers Trust is among the largest commercial banks in the United States and has a presence in more than 50 countries around the world. Bankers Trust is active with individual and institutional clients in more than 80 international markets dealing in currencies, equities and commodities.

PLATFORMS: Bankers Trust stores about 200GB of relational data in three database systems: Microsoft SQL Server 6.5, IBM DB2 and Sybase 11. The Seagate Info system runs on Compaq Proliant 7000 servers, each running Windows NT.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Bankers Trust helps corporations leverage and manage their existing financial assets in a variety of areas, such as leveraging current account structures, structuring initial public offerings and managing portfolios. As such, Bankers has to access and distribute large amounts of data, which changes daily according to international markets. In early 1997, an internal study revealed that Bankers deployed an inordinate amount of resources for systems infrastructure development such as homegrown report writers, clustering technologies and network communications. At the time of the study, Bankers had more than 250 reporting applications using more than 30 different architectures. Bankers realized that it was using 80 percent of their resources for IT infrastructure systems development instead of mission-critical applications. Seagate Info helped Bankers reallocate resources from developing IT infrastructure to spending time solving application issues.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Seagate Info meets four major scalability requirements for Bankers Trust: load balancing, fault tolerance, clustering and thin-wire Internet/intranet report distribution. Seagate Info allows Bankers to take advantage of the reporting technology of Seagate Crystal Reports for standard report creation and distribution. The introduction of Seagate Holos OLAP cubes in Seagate Info delivers Windows-like client functionality via the Web for sophisticated ad hoc data analysis.

STRENGTHS: Seagate Info's scalability is unmatched. Its unique middle tier and enterprise information sharing and delivery ensure that the system can scale to meet any user demand. Bankers Trust is already seeing noticeable results. At peak month end, Bankers Trust creates and distributes over 50,000 reports in less than two days.

WEAKNESSES: Bankers Trust could benefit from a richer Excel export and integration capability within the Seagate Crystal Report component. Seagate Software expects to meet this feature enhancement in the next major release of Seagate Info.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Seagate Info was chosen for its enterprise-wide functionality, which would work with the reporting applications Bankers had been developing internally. Seagate Info's back-end architecture proved to be a major determining factor for Bankers Trust, as did the strength of the company itself.

DELIVERABLES: Bankers Trust chose Private Bank Client Services, one of its high-end applications, to test the system as it had high report creation and distribution volume requirements. Private Bank Client Services was formerly run on a mainframe, with all statements text based, unattractive and difficult to manipulate. Using Seagate Info, Bankers has been able to execute statements of better quality at high volumes. Initially, Bankers worked independently with the system and generated 10,000 reports during a 48-hour period. Working with Seagate Software developers, Bankers reached deliverables of 50,000 reports and anticipated 100,000 reports per 48-hour period by the end of 1998. They estimate that implementation time was cut in half by working with Seagate Software rather than working independently.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Seagate Software has been very responsive to the needs of Bankers Trust, and they are intent on evolving the product as the industry changes. Seagate Software worked extensively in the implementation of the system, and its hands-on support has been invaluable to the success of the deployment. Overall support has been excellent.

DOCUMENTATION: Seagate Info includes comprehensive documentation on all aspects of the product. Background information on business intelligence is required for understanding complete product functionality. This information is included in Seagate Info marketing collateral.
