July 9, 2012 – SAP served up hard figures on its enterprise acceptance of HANA and increased its partnership program on the “birthday” of the in-memory platform.
As of July 1, Kevin Gilroy, SVP of Global Indirect Channels, counted more than 400 customers who have purchased HANA, half which are “fully functional,” with 370 project implementations currently in progress. That trickles down to 70,000 end users, and 4,000 instances with Amazon Web Services cloud.
Bobby Vetter, SVP of Ecosystem and Channels at SAP, said during a media call Monday that the German software megavendor plans to make its in-memory platform more widely available to resellers by mid-July. Opening the partnership program means an extension to VARs and SIs for customers to move from Business Information Works (BW) to HANA, including credits or rebates to sellers or service partners. Vetter says that the push of adoption in the first year enabled SAP to strip away reseller restrictions in an effort to “propel HANA even further.” Gilroy put the overall partner contribution for all SAP software at 33 percent, which is "ahead of plan" for their goal of 40 percent partner contribution by 2015.
Vetter also indicated that the level of use by developers in AWS has SAP exploring other developments options in the cloud, as well as, “in time,” its own cloud infrastructure for HANA. In terms of other cloud providers, Vetter only said that, “in principle, we’re open.”
SAP introduced HANA at its SAPPHIRE NOW conference in May 2011 and during the past year has introduced new aspects that connect with its other data warehouse and analytics solutions. HANA was also spotlighted in a few recent acquisitions made by SAP, including new enterprise application on-demand possibilities in the $4.3 billion buy of cloud collaboration provider Ariba.
Rival Oracle has also double-downed on its efforts with the release of its in-memory database, Exalytics.
