SAP and Dell are expanding their existing partnership in the areas of cloud computing and in-memory databases.

The announcement, made at SAP’s annual Sapphire conference in Orlando, will see SAP’s applications be made available for deployment on Dell’s VIS data center platform. In addition, Dell’s PowerEdge R910 system will now be among the hardware platforms certified by SAP for running its in-memory computing technology.

Under the partnership Dell is now an SAP-certified provider of cloud services, as well as an SAP-certified provider of hosting services. Dell said its cloud delivery offerings were vetted against SAP’s strict criteria for delivering applications.

At the joint announcement the companies showcased the work they are conducting with the University of Kentucky, a customer that is moving its SAP installation over to a Dell-managed cloud.

“Cloud computing is not only coming of age, it represents a significant opportunity in enterprise computing,” University of Kentucky chief information officer Vince Kellen said in a statement. “The initial tests have shown some impressive results. Over the short and long term we expect to take advantage of the scale, openness and flexibility that Dell’s cloud solutions will provide.”

In the second part of the announcement Dell said it will now sell appliances pre-configured to support SAP’s HANA in-memory database technology. The technology allows data being used in complex analyses to be held in RAM instead of in disk storage, significantly increasing performance. Dell will also offer support services for companies looking to deploy the technology.
