BACKGROUND: State Street Corporation, a world leader in financial services, provides a full range of products and services for large pools of investment assets. State Street's customers include mutual fund companies and other investment managers, corporations, public pension funds, unions, non-profit organizations, and families and individuals. With $6.1 trillion in assets under custody and $727 billion in assets under management, we have the focus, experience and technology to support the daily needs of our customers and the beneficiaries and shareholders they represent.

PLATFORMS: Oracle 8.0/UNIX, Windows 95, and PeopleSoft 5.x and higher.

PROBLEM SOLVED:State Street's HR data is stored on PeopleSoft 7.5. The company is multinational and the HRIS department serves internal customers from investment services to benefits to finance. HR operations handles the bulk of simple data requests using PeopleSoft (PS) Query. For more complex queries, the HRIS team becomes involved, writing SQR code and working with the IT department to put the code into production. Considering the volume of requests received weekly, developing SQR code for complex queries was a considerable time drain. Using Nuvosoft's Rwiz allowed the team to quickly write complex queries. The Rwiz code was ready for production without additional programming work. However, if necessary the code could be tweaked, giving us a substantial head start on tough assignments. Rwiz saved us hours of labor.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Rwiz is a report wizard for PeopleSoft SQRs. Through a three-step graphical interface, Rwiz generates sophisticated detail, summary and cross tab reports with breaks, sorts, totals and processing logic, quickly and efficiently. Rwiz can easily pull pieces of data out of a field instead of the entire field. Rwiz supports flexible and advanced joins. Rwiz automatically detects the most complete joins between the tables you've added to the report, but provides the flexibility to override these join criteria if necessary. Also, Rwiz enables developers to switch easily between regular and outer joins. The coding is handled automatically. Rwiz allows users to convert PeopleSoft queries to SQRs for improved performance and provides the ability to import existing SQRs into the Rwiz program to take advantage of outputting report data to Excel, text or Word files.

STRENGTHS: Speed and ease of use are the two main strengths of this product. Through efficient table joins, Rwiz produces code from queries very quickly. Also it's an easy- to-use wizard. You can spend 10 minutes writing the query and two hours on analysis of data, instead of two hours writing the query and then two more hours analyzing the data.

WEAKNESSES: At the present time, queries can only be shared on a LAN.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The IT department at State Street chose the tool for HRIS. They were looking for a product that could build SQR code quickly. Rwiz generates code much faster than PS Query and Crystal and handles more complex queries than either of these tools. The code produced by Rwiz can be tweaked, unlike PS Query.

DELIVERABLES: The HR team receives between 100 and 150 ad-hoc requests for data weekly. Ninety percent of these requests are handled by Rwiz and delivered to internal customers through Excel or text file reports.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Vendor support was great from the start and Nuvosoft continues to be a valued partner.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation is quite good. The product is very easy to learn especially if you're already familiar with the PS Query tool.
