BACKGROUND: The Royal Bank of Canada is Canada's largest bank.
PLATFORMS: INTEGRITY Developer Workbench runs on Windows 95/98/NT. The execution environment includes Windows NT, UNIX (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, DEC UNIX, DG-UX), AS/400 and IBM MVS.
PROBLEM SOLVED: Royal Bank had the business goal of developing a customer information system that would enable the bank to streamline decision support, improve customer service and identify new markets. A major challenge was to solve data quality problems in order to provide an accurate view of customers and business entities and their relationship. In order to accomplish these objectives, Royal Bank standardized and cleansed their existing data and identified business relationships contained in the data fields in order to provide composite views of each customer's account portfolio. In addition, Royal Bank appended information from the Canadian Business Index (CBI) reference file to the resulting customer records. At the same time, the bank preserved the information in the data's native language of English or French. The result was a highly accurate consolidated view of customers and business entities across the enterprise.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Vality's INTEGRITY Data Re-engineering environment provides a Windows-based Workbench to build and maintain procedures for data investigation, standardization, matching across data values (both internal and third party) and reconciliation across records. Prebuilt procedures are available to parse and analyze free-form fields and construct rule sets for matching, link-related records where no common key exists and construct new records based upon data value reconciliation and consolidation rules. Vality provides data cleansing, parsing, lexical analysis, probabilistic matching and comprehensive data typing. The Workbench automatically generates the parameters that control and optimize the Windows NT, UNIX or MVS run-time environments. Each step has complete audit trails and reporting available. In addition to the batch capabilities, a full set of "C" callable libraries are available to provide real-time parsing, standardization and conditioning of single value and free-form input fields and the matching of duplicates and relationships for any entity type.
STRENGTHS: INTEGRITY provides a modular environment to support multiple stages of data transformation. The automated investigation process provides analysts with an immediate view of the condition of the data. Prebuilt procedures take the complexity out of defining data by automating much of the data analysis, standardization, matching and reconciliation of data records. Geo- and postal-coding procedures are provided as well as customization capabilities enabling business and system analysts to define organization-specific rule bases, weighting factors and user-built procedures. Third-party data sources can be integrated such as Dun and Bradstreet and the CBI that was used by Royal Bank. The callable libraries enable real-time editing to ensure that information is accurate as it is entered into a system.
WEAKNESSES: For organizations requiring complex extraction and load capabilities for data warehouses and data marts, other products may be required to work with Vality.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Royal Bank of Canada chose INTEGRITY over internal and other commercial products because it enabled the bank to get up and running quickly, and it met all of the bank's extensive data quality requirements for the present and future.
DELIVERABLES: INTEGRITY delivered reports that analyzed existing data to assess its actual condition and to identify the content of data fields and statistics relative to the population of the content. INTEGRITY transformed, standardized and reconciled the data and provided input files for Royal Bank to load into the data warehouse.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Vality Technology provides product upgrades on a frequent basis. In addition, Vality provided services working in partnership with Royal Bank to deliver a successful implementation.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation for INTEGRITY 3.2 includes a user guide and a "Getting Started" manual. The Workbench provides Windows-based, context-sensitive help to guide the user through the major processes of investigation, standardization, matching and reconciliation of the data.
