February 21, 2008 - Business Application Research Center (BARC), independent software industry analyst and publisher of the influential OLAP Report, released The BI Survey 7 by Nigel Pendse.

The survey is the largest annual vendor-independent data-based research report on the business intelligence (BI) market. This year’s edition is based on a detailed survey of over 1,900 end users and consultants.

The BI Survey 7 compares 16 market-leading products from vendors including Microsoft, SAP, MicroStrategy, Business Objects and acquisition associated companies Cognos and IBM.

“The BI Survey 7 reveals what is actually happening in the real BI world - not what the industry experts and vendors confidently assure you. We regularly find that the received wisdom in this industry doesn’t match what the majority of real-world users are finding,” said author Nigel Pendse. “For instance, almost all demos now focus on the Web version of the product. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking that Web BI usage is universal, but this simply isn’t the case – a surprisingly large proportion of people are still using client-server or stand-alone architectures.”

This year’s survey reveals more myths than those about commonly used architectures. This biggest myth exposed by the survey, according to Pendse, is that you get what you pay for.

“We have found that some of the big-name vendors and the most expensive products are not delivering the same business benefits or level of support achieved by some of their lesser-known counterparts. There are smaller vendors out there producing cheaper and all-round better solutions than some industry giants,” he said.
