REVIEWER: D. Kelby Kostival, president and CEO for Results OnShore, LLC.
BACKGROUND: Results OnShore is an onshore outsourcing IT services firm focused on providing a competitive, high-quality alternative to foreign outsourcing. The firm was contracted to assist with a U.S. state's efforts to implement information sharing across local, regional and state law enforcement agencies. Sypherlink Harvester was selected by multiple regions within the state to assist with much of the up-front work required in understanding what specific data elements existed within the more than 60 local law enforcement agencies and how those data elements related to the state's data model. Within these regions, Results OnShore consultants leveraged Sypherlink Harvester to perform the work.
HARDWARE PLATFORMS: Windows XP.
PROBLEM SOLVED: In any large data conversion effort, accurately and rapidly mapping legacy sources to target systems is always a challenge. With Sypherlink Harvester, we were able to gain data discovery, data organization and mapping capabilities through the use of this technology that, ultimately, allowed us to perform the initial data mapping more rapidly and accurately than our traditional means. Specifically, we were able to deliver - on average - a single source, fully mapped, in one to two days. This was significantly faster than our traditional means, which took five to seven days.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Harvester was used to automate the discovery of data relationships across the systems and accelerate the mapping of data relationships from the source systems to the state target data model. The technology allowed us to quickly make a first pass through matching the data fields, then enabled the flexibility for us to quickly validate the automated matching - altering the results based on actual subject-matter knowledge or specific source data knowledge. The Results OnShore resource personnel, who were not familiar with the tool's functionality prior to this engagement, were able to easily get up to speed and complete the work quickly and accurately. As a result of the ease of use and the effectiveness of the technology, we were able to execute a higher-quality deliverable in a fraction of the time.
STRENGTHS: Harvester was highly effective in capturing, collecting and organizing the data and metadata across the source systems. The tool's intuitive user interface enabled the acceleration of mapping from source to target - three to four times faster than what could have been done manually - resulting in the ability to spend more time flushing out conversion rules and data quality issues.
WEAKNESSES: Versioning and change management functionality is limited.
SELECTION CRITERIA: We determined that the foundation for which the tool was built and the operations of the technology made it the only product that would meet our needs.
DELIVERABLES: High-quality, mapped data sources were provided in a fraction of the time of traditional techniques.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Support was excellent throughout our project.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation needs work. Given the nature of our intended use of this product, the documentation was narrow compared to what the product can do. I believe that as the product's usage increases, the documentation will follow with the multitude of scenarios for which it can be used.
