REVIEWER: Michael Neff, CIO of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg).
BACKGROUND: Heidelberg is a solution provider for commercial and industrial customers in the print media industry, with more than 40 percent global market share for sheetfed offset printing machines. The company serves more than 200,000 customers in 170 countries from 250 sales offices and 13 production facilities worldwide.
PLATFORMS: Five physical and four virtual HP servers (64 bit). This environment is made up of a development, staging and production area.
PROBLEM SOLVED: The main data source at Heidelberg is an SAP R/3 system, complemented by other sources, e.g., shop-floor scheduling, external business partners, IT-infrastructure management systems and numerous Access databases and Excel spreadsheets. Due to our SAP R/3 customizations and the heterogenous data systems, analysis and reporting with SAP Business Information Warehouse required very time-consuming and expensive adaptations because most standard filters and interfaces could not be used directly. Using QlikView from QlikTech, we were able to complement our SAP reporting capabilities with fast, user-friendly ad hoc analysis and reporting, and with easier data integration from any mix of sources.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: We deploy QlikView for our global IT management, global marketing and sales cockpits and manufacturing operations in Germany, as well as to create specific management reports and support service divisions in Asia and the U.S. We initially ramped up in Germany with about 200 end users. We recovered this initial investment in QlikView within four months. A formal study revealed that our internal rate of return on QlikView over three years was 263 percent for our global IT organization alone. This is from savings in IT labor, infrastructure and planning costs. We are now in the process of expanding our QlikView deployment to support approximately 2,500 finance, sales, service and manufacturing users at Heidelberg offices and production facilities worldwide.
STRENGTHS: One strength is simple generation of reports. QlikViews in-memory technology and intuitive user interface make it very easy to create analytical reporting. In the past, the development of standard reports took several hours or even days. Now, new reports can be completed within a time frame of minutes to a few hours. QlikView is very user-friendly. Even untrained, nontechnical employees can get their own analytical results very quickly. QlikView allows our end users to work with their data easily and directly. This helps them to gain a faster and deeper understanding of data and to make better-informed decisions.
WEAKNESSES: To implement a BI architecture on an enterprise level, we request some enhancements of the extract, transform and load process (especially for job scheduling) and the integration to metadata management.
SELECTION CRITERIA: We were looking for an analysis platform to complement our existing SAP capabilities and better leverage the high quality of data within our SAP systems. We needed to increase our analysis and reporting flexibility to accommodate new demands and conduct ad hoc analysis, especially analysis involving additional data sources. An earlier version of QlikView was already in use at one of our eastern European facilities, which operated with local (non-SAP) applications to deliver reporting consistent with our SAP solutions. We decided to evaluate the current version of QlikView for our greater needs and have been very pleased with the results.
DELIVERABLES: Deliverables include dashboards and reports for IT analysis, financial analysis, sales analysis and manufacturing analysis. For example, our customer cockpit analyzes data from 30 sources to measure orders, products, aftermarket consumables usage, interactions and services over time by customer, product, category and region. The prototype with 6 million records took only three days to develop.
VENDOR SUPPORT: At present, an enterprise support level is being established.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation provided is all-embracing and adequate.QlikView
