Despite disappointing shipments in some network technologies areas, the economic slowdown may actually create opportunities for network product support providers, a new study published by IDC reveals. As projects are put on hold, and spending curtailed, enterprises have an immediate need to protect their infrastructure investments through regular maintenance activities often available through extended warranties and support contracts. This is spurring a shift in focus to enhancing and maintaining the existing network, thus providing a revenue opportunity for vendors offering a range of onsite, remote, and other technical support services.
In addition, IDC research indicates a great disparity continues to exist in the networking product support market. Depending on the specific product segment, the market could be experiencing double-digit growth. IDC believes certain emerging network technologies - specifically converged private branch exchanges (CBX), softswitch and gateway products, IP VPN products, and optical devices - will provide attractive support opportunities during the next several years.
