PLATFORMS: The Pinpoint Data Warehouse for Insurance operates on Sybase IQ or any other SQL data warehouse. The WhiteLight server operates on Windows NT and Sun Solaris.
BACKGROUND: Pinpoint Solutions, LLC of Livingston, New Jersey, designs and develops the Pinpoint Risk Analyzer, a loss and actuarial analysis solution for the insurance industry. Pinpoint combined its expertise in loss and actuarial analysis with the OLAP skills required to create a highly complex and calculation intensive decision support solution. Our customers are looking for ways to improve profitability and understand their loss patterns at detailed levels not typically available via their internal information systems.
PROBLEM SOLVED: In mid-1997, a client with complex reporting requirements asked us to develop a premium and loss analysis solution, with large data sets (multi-million rows), multiple drill-down dimensions and complex date-dependent calculations. At that time, we brought in WhiteLight, an on-line analytical processing (OLAP) environment by WhiteLight Systems, Inc. By enhancing our data warehouse and developing a WhiteLight model specifically for loss and actuarial analysis, we were able to use WhiteLight to provide the required analysis for insurance premiums, claim expenses and actuarial calculations. The Pinpoint Risk Analyzer provides a fully integrated solution including the Pinpoint Data Warehouse for Insurance (including summary tables), WhiteLight and the corresponding WhiteLight models, schemas and reporting library. This solution, which includes 20 integrated analytical dimensions provided a very specific benefit to our client--they were able to view their loss patterns at detailed levels that were not available before, enabling them to make business decisions based on the information provided by the model.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Information from various systems is extracted and inserted into the Pinpoint Data Warehouse. The WhiteLight analytical model then creates a virtual data mart with multidimensional analytical capabilities so users can simply access the pre-programmed library and/or create new reports (ad hoc) to add to the pre-programmed library. Pinpoint is also currently protyping a geographically enabled version of Risk Analyzer by integrating Map Objects from ESRI.
STRENGTHS: WhiteLight's advanced analytical capabilities enable complex analyses on large data sets, helping Pinpoint's customers to better understand the true costs, risks and profitability of their business. Risk Analyzer users can analyze multiple dimensions of data, drill down, perform "what- if" scenario analyses, and slice and dice the calculated loss and actuarial measures using the 20 independent analytical dimensions. The integration of WhiteLight provides a very powerful front end to our data warehouse, which enables our solution to provide very comprehensive analytical reports. WhiteLight has the flexibility and power to provide models and schemas for sophisticated analyses, thus supporting the trend toward increasingly proactive detailed measurement and management of risk and profitability. In fact, we attribute the success of the Risk Analyzer to three things: our data warehouse model, the use of Sybase IQ to host our data warehouse and WhiteLight. Most of the data we analyze is from blue-chip companies, and WhiteLight is a big component in our ability to serve them.
WEAKNESSES: WhiteLight has limited presentation-reporting capabilities for both Web and network-based environments. In April, WhiteLight bundled Crystal Info for WhiteLight to enhance reporting and provide Web-based scheduling and push capabilities.
SELECTION CRITERIA: WhiteLight enables users to perform complex analyses on large amounts of data, down to fine levels of detail, in a powerful, flexible and user-friendly environment.
DELIVERABLES: Business analysts can generate ad hoc reports that present a library of quantitative and qualitative measures which analyze their policy portfolios using 20 integrated analytical dimensions and drill downs including: coverage type, transaction type, coverage features and loss and actuarial measures, to name a few. The calculations include those required to quantify and forecast loss ratios as well as to present certain emergence triangles.
VENDOR SUPPORT: WhiteLight's support is excellent. They provide both pre- and post-implementation support.
DOCUMENTATION: WhiteLight's documentation is complete and easy to understand, allowing Pinpoint the ability to operate the product on documentation provided.
