BACKGROUND: PHH Arval provides outsourced, integrated fleet services and specialized truck fleet services, including fleet leasing, fleet management and card payment solutions, to thousands of corporate, government and service-related fleets. Founded in 1946, PHH is a wholly owned subsidiary of PHH Corporation. It is North America's second-largest provider of commercial fleet management services. In conjunction with strategic marketing partners, PHH Arval provides services throughout the world.

PLATFORMS: All requests to Hyperion Performance Suite are routed through the primary server, which is an HP ProLiant DL580 G2 server (four Pentium 4 2.8GHz processors, 8GB RAM) running on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Two other servers are HP ProLiant DL380 G4 server, (two Pentium 4 3.4GHz processors, 4GB RAM) running on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. They run other Hyperion Performance Suite services and the Microsoft SQL Server repository.

PROBLEM SOLVED: PHH has a highly diverse client base with widely varying reporting needs. Developing a dashboard to satisfy all needs in a timely manner was a critical challenge. PHH wanted to set itself apart from competitors by delivering a Web-based business intelligence solution (dashboard and report portal) currently not available in the fleet marketplace. We expanded on our award-winning information management system, PHH InterActive, by providing a real-time 24x7 dashboard that summarizes massive amounts of data in a way that allowed for portability, scheduling, individualized services, security and customization.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The PHH InterActive Dashboard is the most comprehensive dashboard in the fleet management industry. Providing three years of historical fleet data, it helps fleet managers track key performance indicators and expenses and monitor their fleet trends and key cost drivers. Fleet managers get a snapshot view with easy-to-read charts and graphs. They can print or download data from any area of the dashboard for other uses or analyses and identify cost drivers, trends and incidents in their fleets that require action or impact business plans and budgets. PHH clients have commented that they believe the dashboard will save them up to 24 hours per month. The dashboard is a major source of client satisfaction and retention, and an obvious and easy-to-sell differentiator in the marketplace.

STRENGTHS: Hyperion Performance Suite is one of the only products that is truly integrated. We found that many evaluated products did specific things well, but Hyperion was the only one that did all the functions we needed in a comprehensive and integrated way. In addition to providing a comprehensive enterprise toolset, we didn't have to redo all of our existing reporting and found it easy to integrate into our existing client report portal.

WEAKNESSES: We had multiple challenges integrating within a Web environment and found inconsistent capabilities between Hyperion's thin and zero-client modes.

SELECTION CRITERIA: We were already using Brio for enterprise reporting, but hadn't upgraded to Hyperion Performance Suite. Once we determined that we wanted to upgrade, we brought in the leading BI vendors and narrowed the field to a short list of providers. In the end, we stayed with Hyperion due to our ability to leverage the significant investments already made.

DELIVERABLES: Fleet managers have secure logins to see their dashboards, which are refreshed weekly or monthly (depending on the update frequency of the source data). From that summary-level information, they can drill into details, create custom reports or pass along key data to their teams. Self-service, 24x7 access to data presented in an at-a-glance dashboard format gives customers instant access to exactly what they need to best manage their large fleets.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Overall, support has been very responsive and very knowledgeable. We found the Hyperion knowledge base very helpful, but found that on occasion it doesn't have information applicable to our customized environment's issues. We used a Hyperion partner, OneAnswer Solutions, during implementation.

DOCUMENTATION: Documentation is adequate for a standard installation. We found other resources on the Hyperion developer site to be of great value. In many instances, this user-provided information was more useful than the core documentation.
