BACKGROUND: PHH Vehicle Management Services (PHH) provides corporate clients worldwide with services ranging from vehicle leasing and credit cards for fuel and maintenance to total fleet management.

PLATFORMS: PHH runs ETI*EXTRACT on an IBM-compatible mainframe, Microsoft NT, Sun Solaris platform, both COBOL and C programming languages and Sybase database management system.

PROBLEM SOLVED: PHH needed a more efficient way to provide customized integrated client reporting which could convert operational data into strategic information fast. The solution was a data warehouse which would speed the process and open up new opportunities to turn information into products. After an extensive evaluation, PHH selected the ETI*EXTRACT Tool Suite as the data warehouse tool of choice.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: In using ETI*EXTRACT to generate data extraction, transformation and migration programs, PHH was able to achieve a greater than 10:1 productivity gain over writing its own code. PHH continues to leverage the infrastructure built with ETI*EXTRACT to implement new releases of the data warehouse with expanded functionality. PHH is on the tenth release of its data warehouse.

STRENGTHS: It is critical to build a data warehouse on an infrastructure that will be able to adapt to changes quickly. ETI*EXTRACT's extensibility allows PHH to easily make changes based on data discoveries, user demands and newly introduced data sources. Today at PHH, changes to conversions and data interface programs take less than an hour. The flexibility and power of ETI*EXTRACT enabled PHH to meet aggressive goals and keep costs to a minimum.

WEAKNESSES: There is a need for a broader array of platforms. While ETI*EXTRACT runs on the most widely deployed UNIX platforms, there is a need for an NT port. [Since this review was written, ETI*EXTRACT has been adapted to run on NT.]

SELECTION CRITERIA: PHH searched for tools that could adapt readily to our environment, required little or no custom programming and captured and exchanged meta data with other tools for a seamless infrastructure. In addition, PHH wanted a proven product with measurable performance. On-site consulting for a successful initial product was essential. The selection team felt that ETI*EXTRACT would not only expedite building and maintaining our data warehouse but would make it easy for PHH to introduce changes in the system at any point during its implementation.

DELIVERABLES: The product's ease of use in defining and building the programs made it possible to generate 500,000 lines of bug-free code in six weeks.

VENDOR SUPPORT: ETI provided excellent on-site consulting and support services.

DOCUMENTATION: Documentation doesn't always reflect everything in a product. ETI's high degree of service extends to the help-line personnel and the consultant assigned to our account.
