BACKGROUND: Founded in 1996, CareMedic Systems, Inc. is an industry leader in proactive financial management for hospitals and providers, and delivers a comprehensive suite of revenue cycle management solutions. CareMedics technology is implemented in more than 1,500 hospitals and provider organizations across the U.S.
PLATFORMS: We use Intel-Based servers running Microsoft Windows 2003 Server and Microsoft SQL 2005/2008.
PROBLEM SOLVED: We identified data integration as a key foundation to assist our growth. With more than 1,500 trading partners (TPs) connecting to CareMedic on a daily basis, the process of importing and exporting data files between these TPs requires strong process management, integration and monitoring. A majority of the files today are sent via HTTP and FTP but can vary from dialup to Web services and everything in the middle. The format of the data varies from HIPAA X12 to reports, which are validated, processed, stored and rebatched prior to exporting to the payers. This process is then reversed prior to exporting back to our clients. Pervasive Data Integrator has given us the ability to build an integration layer that supports our technology initiatives and is scalable enough to automate an end-to-end solution. Pervasive Data Integrator has the ability to digest and transform all the file types we require then decrypt, transform and load the data into our applications. Currently, were deploying Pervasive Integration Hub to manage and configure the processing of many diverse data feeds. This will replace our in-house development that today uses Pervasive Data Integrator to perform the maps. We worked extensively with Pervasive Professional Services to build additional functionality on top of the standard product that may be incorporated into the base offering. Pervasive Integration Hub allows us to define jobs consisting of multiple steps and then fully automate the communication and retrieval processes. This solution is horizontally scalable, allowing us to expand our infrastructure as needed as we increase demand while converting our existing interfaces from early releases of Pervasive Data Integrator to V9.2 and Integration Hub.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Through the use of Pervasive Data Integrator, CareMedic is standardizing on one flexible, scalable integration tool throughout our HealthCare Integration Infrastructure. Pervasive Integration Hub will allow us to use a single master process from which any file from any source can be retrieved, transformed and loaded into our data warehouse. Pervasive Integration Hub is a metadata rich, parameterized platform to manage complex data pipelines and data flows. Pervasive Integration Hub provides easy configuration management to add and maintain thousands of data feeds, proactive data quality checking and high pass filtering, restart-ability, notifications and much more.
STRENGTHS: Pervasives responsiveness as a company is one of their greatest strengths. Access to support, product management, development and executive resources is always an option and never an issue. In addition, the Pervasive Integration Hub solution will allow us to manage our TPs and allow us to fully automate, monitor, log and report on the import and export of data between our clients and payers.
WEAKNESSES: I would like to see more flexibility and ease of use around mapping XML hierarchical schemas and the persistence of real-time connections such as HTTP and Web services.
SELECTION CRITERIA: After rigorous request for proposal responses, evaluations, proofs of concept and testing, we determined that Pervasive was the clear winner. We needed a product and solution stack that could conform to our business and technology needs but still provide the over-the-top functionality and scalability that matched our business needs. A lot of the competition offered package solutions of multiple toolkits that had been acquired through acquisitions and bolted together. Pervasive offered one solution and was committed to developing the solution going forward.
DELIVERABLES: Pervasive Integration Hub will allow us to normalize our process to implementation, testing and rollout to production as well as to streamline the sharing of data across the electronic financial record network and to provide speed to value for our customers.
VENDOR SUPPORT: We have a great relationship with sales, product management, professional services and technical support. Through the close working relationship with Pervasive Professional Services consultants, we are fully replacing our existing integration systems. Pervasive has a keen interest in our requirements, both present and future, as they continue to build and enhance their products and solutions.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation is current within the products. Training materials are available with many of examples to add assistance.
