PLATFORMS: The Trillium Software System is operates on mainframes, UNIX systems, AS/400 and Windows NT/95. Trillium also runs under Java and is portable to SAP.

BACKGROUND: PerformanceData, a division of Trans Union Corporation, is a leading information and service provider for direct response marketers. With a national name and address list of over 160 million consumers, PerformanceData's file is among the most comprehensive in the business.

PROBLEM SOLVED: PerformanceData is using Trillium to create new information-based products and services. From a 27 million record database containing information on ownership of large consumer durables, The Trillium Software System scanned, investigated and parsed floating, free-form text and also created and populated new fields with derived data. PerformanceData required a solution that operated in a Windows NT environment and whose business intelligence, once developed, could be ported to additional platforms and applications. Within two weeks of purchasing Trillium, PerformanceData was in full production mode cleansing and reconditioning all 27 million records, enabling them to create new products for their customers.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The Trillium Software System is an enterprise-wide, platform independent, data cleansing software product that allows organizations to cleanse all types of legacy and operational data. Trillium's modules, are written in ANSI standard "C" and are callable either on-line to cleanse data at the point of entry or in batch mode within legacy systems. Each module is tunable to meet individual client's business needs. Trillium transforms and reengineers data from multiple, disparate sources into data of the highest quality for feeding to information systems such as a data warehouse, ODS, MCIF or DBMS.

STRENGTHS: The Trillium Software System can be operated in a platform-independent environment and results can be used for a variety of customer information and generalized data marketing applications. It has the ability to identify and establish personal household and business relationships from highly complex, unstructured data sources. Trillium's user defined transformation, data filling capabilities and data element repair facilities are unique among solutions that operate in a platform independent environment. Marketing and IT professionals can equally tune and apply Trillium's "best practices" to establish an enterprise-wide data quality management program within an organization. The Conversion Workbench is especially easy to set up, and its graphical user interface (GUI) makes complex data reengineering, investigation and analysis a simple task.

WEAKNESSES: Trillium is limited to data cleansing, conversion and reengineering capabilities and does not provide functions such as extraction and propagation.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Trillium's established core of "best practices" prevented PerformanceData from engaging in a protracted code-writing exercise that would be a drain on both time and resources. It was Trillium's specific ability to understand, elementize and create a distribution of words and phrases from within floating, free-form text that made it a perfect fit for PerformanceData. Trillium was chosen for its ability to meet PerformanceData's immediate needs for data reengineering, as well as for its potential to solve enterprise-wide data quality issues.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Training and learning Trillium occurred much more easily and quickly than we imagined. We were able to set up the tables and learn how to tune them within one week.

DOCUMENTATION: The reference manuals are easy to use and provide diagrams and sample code examples that support the module functions. The interactive GUI and Trillium Control Center are easy to implement, understand and use.
