April 22, 2013 – In a deal meant to spread its global services reach and improve the user experience of its analytic tools, Pentaho has acquired Portugal-based consulting partner Webdetails.
In a statement on the deal, first announced Monday, Pentaho said adding Webdetails components and team members will expand its visualization capabilities in dashboards, particularly with use of Instaview and delivering new interfaces. In addition, Pentaho expects the Webdetails team to “complement and accelerate” its R&D plans for engaging more business users on its analytics platform and data integration tools. In March, Pentaho executives and spokespeople outlined to Information-Management.com a company roadmap for 2013 that focused on “simplifying use as the next layer” of BI and visualization.
Webdetails has a slew of community-based tools and a service practice area covering user interface design, data visualization, ETL and warehousing architecture, and customized component development. The vendor partner recently updated its version of the data visualization plug-in Community Chart Components 2, or CCC2.
Shawn Rogers, VP of research specializing in BI and data warehousing at Enterprise Management Associates, says absorbing the consulting practice spreads Pentaho’s reach and capabilities in client services. Webdetails engineering personnel may also be a bonus, alongside connections already made from a standing partnership between the firms, says Rogers.
“Pentaho has made several strategic acquisitions – LucidEra, Weka – in previous years to add functionality to their offering. Webdetails adds capabilities beyond the platform to better service customers and assist with custom solutions,” he says.
Financial terms of the deal, which is final, were not disclosed. Webdetails founder Pedro Alves, whom Pentaho dubbed a “high-profile member” of its- open source community, will assume the new role of senior vice president of community for Pentaho.
