McDATA Demonstrates FCIP Capability in a Director-Class Switch

This demonstration of FCIP blade technology within its Intrepidä Director marks the first time in which FCIP, Fibre Channel and FICON data traffic will be carried by a Director-class storage networking product. McDATA is continuing to extend its leadership in the storage networking industry by demonstrating the protocol-independent architecture of its Intrepid Directors. Customers want choice and flexibility, and delivering to them a solution that adapts to changing business and technology requirements is a core

FCIP allows customers to implement more effective disaster recovery plans by connecting remote data centers up to thousands of miles apart. Customers may also use FCIP over cost-effective WAN or MAN telecommunications services to link remote SANs for business continuance services. McDATA’s multiprotocol demonstration illustrates the lower costs, increased performance and improved manageability that will result from the integration of FCIP capabilities and other multiprotocol services into McDATA’s Director platforms.

Automatic Detection and Fast Backups Protect Next-Generation Mobile PC

Dantz Development Corporation, a worldwide provider of backup and restore software for small and mid-size businesses, announced support for Microsoft’s new Tablet PC with their Dantz Retrospect backup software. Dantz Retrospect employs patented technologies to automatically detect and protect Tablet PCs whenever they connect to the network, through both wired and wireless connections.

Tablet PC users will be able to leverage the power of Windows XP applications and pen-based computing to increase their effectiveness in many work environments. Digital notes from impromptu meetings in hallways and offices will quickly become business-critical data that must be protected against loss. Dantz Retrospect allows businesses to easily extend their umbrella of automatic data protection to Tablet PCs.

Dantz’s patented Proactive Client Backup system relentlessly pursues mobile computers, including Tablet PCs, and dynamically adjusts user-defined priorities based on the availability of systems in need of a backup. As soon as a Tablet PC is detected on the network, Retrospect¹s Progressive Backup technology goes to work in the background, copying only new and changed files, thus saving time and conserving network bandwidth. Later, any file, folder or hard disk drive can be restored precisely to any point in time from any previous backup. For more information, please visit

Zurich Capital Markets Manages its SAN with SANsymphony

Zurich Capital Markets Asia Limited (ZCMA) has selected SANsymphony software from DataCore Software to manage its storage area network (SAN). ZCMA is a member of the Zurich Capital Markets group (ZCM). ZCM is a leading provider of innovative financial products and services. Founded in 1997, ZCMA is a member of the Zurich Financial Services Group and serves a global client base including financial institutions, asset management firms, corporations and governmental bodies.

ZCMA has a rapidly growing, multi-terabyte environment that is centrally managed by SANsymphony. The company deployed SANsymphony to take advantage of its Asynchronous IP Mirroring (AIM) feature for disaster recovery and is upgrading its SAN to utilize SANsymphony's unique Networked Managed Volumes (NMV) capabilities for auto-storage provisioning. NMVs take the guesswork out of how much storage capacity to assign to support its mission-critical data for trading databases, e-mail and other applications.

"DataCore has provided us with a cost-effective SAN solution that allows ZCMA to leverage existing hardware investments for a faster return on investment and dramatically lower total cost of ownership" said Frank Baliotis, senior vice president of technology for ZCMA. "We have been able to achieve centralized and cost-effective management of our storage resources with SANsymphony, and implemented its AIM remote-mirroring option for disaster recovery capabilities."

ZCMA is using AIM to mirror key data to a secure remote site outside of Sydney's central business district. AIM provides affordable disaster recovery capabilities by replicating information to the company's off- site location over its existing Internet protocol (IP) infrastructure.
